2020 Wedding Updates

Most of the couples due to be married in the Benefice this year have postponed their weddings until 2021. We all hope there will be a vaccine available perhaps by the New Year and we can then begin to make plans again. We are sorry that couples have had to set aside their wedding plans often after a great deal of time and effort in preparation and we understand how difficult and disappointing this has been for them, their families and friends. We hope we will be able to share some joyful times with them in 2021.

At the moment all the legal preliminaries for marriage have been re-arranged and most couples have been/are being married by common licence rather than having banns read in church. This can usually be arranged quite quickly. The price for obtaining a Common Licence has been reduced during the pandemic.

Looking towards 2021 it is likely that weddings may still need to be restricted in numbers and we expect to have some social distancing measures still in place. Music will also be something that may continue to be under review. Guidance will be updated as it is published.

Christian Marriage

God is love and wherever people share love they are sharing in the very nature of God. It is good to be able to celebrate this gift in church. Weddings are very special occasions and we would like to help you enjoy a wonderful and memorable day. If you live in the parish getting married in your local parish church is quite straightforward. If you don’t live in the parish there are various ways you could still get married in the church of your choice. Please contact us in good time if this is the case and we will help you. Across the benefice we offer a marriage preparation day early in the year to do the preliminary paperwork and to give couples all the information they need to plan their wedding. Following this we offer individual sessions to each couple to plan their order of service and give them the opportunity to look in depth at the vows they are making. These vows lie at the heart of the marriage service.

If you would like to explore getting married in any of the five churches of the benefice please contact:

Prayer for those preparing for marriage.

Lord, send out your Spirit
and renew the face of the earth.
Loving God, Jesus gave his life because he loved deeply and completely.
May our love for one another be all encompassing and life giving.
Help our love be as creative as it is stable,
as passionate as it is respectful,
as gentle as it is strong,
so that all who know us will see in our love the hand of you, our creator.
And if we are blessed with children,
may they thrive in the passionate and energizing love
that has its beginning in the love you have
for the world and all its peoples.
We ask this through, Jesus, our Lord. Amen.
