Considering Baptism

Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals

Baptism is one of the sacraments of the church. The outward sign is the water poured on a person’s head. Inside God gives them the grace and power of the Holy Spirit. Baptism is the way in which a person becomes part of the family of the church. They make a public declaration that they want to become a follower of Jesus. Baptism in the Church of England can be for adults or for children.

All the churches welcome infants or adults for baptism. We want to help and support those who take this important step of faith but we also want people to be able to make the promises to the best of their ability so they can take their place in the community of faith. If you are bringing a baby for baptism you will promise in the service that you will lead by example, pray for them and help your child to be part of the family of the church. If you would like to consider baptism for yourself or for your children the first step would be to come and meet the church family you would be joining. Details of the services can be found on the home page.

Confirmation

For those who were baptised as infants, confirmation provides an opportunity to affirm their faith and make a commitment to following Christ with their own mouths and from their own hearts. Parents and Godparents can only support and encourage children. Eventually they have to decide for themselves. The benefice runs short courses to help people learn more about following Jesus. It is an opportunity to meet others and to think more deeply about belief, worship and Christian living.

For those who were not baptised as children, baptism and confirmation are done together in the same service as the public declaration of an intention to follow of Jesus Christ.
