 A Wedding

God is love and wherever people share love they are sharing in the very nature of God. It is good to be able to celebrate this gift in church. Weddings are very special occasions and we would like to help you enjoy a wonderful and memorable day. If you live in the parish getting married in your local parish church is quite straightforward. If you don’t live in the parish there are various ways you could still get married in the church of your choice. Please contact us in good time if this is the case and we will help you. Across the benefice we offer a marriage preparation day early in the year to do the preliminary paperwork and to give couples all the information they need to plan their wedding. Following this we offer individual sessions to each couple to plan their order of service and give them the opportunity to look in depth at the vows they are making. These vows lie at the heart of the marriage service.

Prayer for those preparing for marriage.

Lord, send out your Spirit

and renew the face of the earth.

Loving God, Jesus gave his life because he loved deeply and completely.

May our love for one another be all encompassing and life giving.

Help our love be as creative as it is stable,

as passionate as it is respectful,

as gentle as it is strong,

so that all who know us will see in our love the hand of you, our creator.

And if we are blessed with children,

may they thrive in the passionate and energizing love

that has its beginning in the love you have

for the world and all its peoples.

We ask this through, Jesus, our Lord.      Amen.

Considering Baptism

Baptism is one of the sacraments of the church. The outward sign is the water poured on a person’s head. Inside God gives them the grace and power of the Holy Spirit. Baptism is the way in which a person becomes part of the family of the church. They make a public declaration that they want to become a follower of Jesus. Baptism in the Church of England can be for adults or for children.

All the churches welcome infants or adults for baptism. We want to help and support those who take this important step of faith but we also want people to be able to make the promises to the best of their ability so they can take their place in the community of faith. If you are bringing a baby for baptism you will promise in the service that you will lead by example, pray for them and help your child to be part of the family of the church. If you would like to consider baptism for yourself or for your children the first step would be to come and meet the church family you would be joining. Details of the services can be found on the home page. For more information please contact:

Confirmation

For those who were baptised as infants, confirmation provides an opportunity to affirm their faith and make a commitment to following Christ with their own mouths and from their own hearts. Parents and Godparents can only support and encourage children. Eventually they have to decide for themselves. The benefice runs short courses to help people learn more about following Jesus. It is an opportunity to meet others and to think more deeply about belief, worship and Christian living.

For those who were not baptised as children, baptism and confirmation are done together in the same service as the public declaration of an intention to follow of Jesus Christ.
